A Solo Adventure in Marrakesh
I have just come back from a solo trip to the enchanting city of Marrakesh for a little reset and recharge time - where the light, colours and warmth make me so happy. Here is what a got up to and a few recommendations if you are planning a trip there anytime soon!
I stayed at the very beautiful Riad42 in the medina. The rooftop and plunge pool are a little sanctuary — peaceful and serene, yet close enough to all the hustle and bustle of the souk. The food was delicious, the staff super friendly, and it truly felt like a home away from home. I’ll definitely be back.
Souk shopping is a burst of colour and inspiration! I have to stop myself because of luggage allowance. It always takes me a little while to get comfortable with the haggling, but once I get going, it’s really fun. I came back with bowls, rugs, and some beautiful woven baskets to hang on the wall.
At Hanout Boutique, I bought a beautiful dress from them last year, but this time I managed to visit their shop in the medina and picked up an amazing burgundy corduroy jacket, which they tailored perfectly for me.
El Fenn is a must for its stunning interiors — plus, it’s one of the few places in the medina where you can get a drink. Sitting on the rooftop with a book and a cocktail… heaven. The shop there is also not to be missed!
Le Jardin is a beautiful green oasis — the perfect spot for a mint tea or lunch. I always love watching the little tortoises wandering about.
Kitan is another beautiful boutique in the medina. Each piece is made on site, and many are one of a kind. I picked up a gorgeous brown waistcoat with the most charming little buttons.
I went slightly rug-crazy this time, inspired by the throw on my bed at Riad42 — cream with pom poms. I also found some beautiful cushion covers to take home.
I discovered some amazing artisans who handcraft small bags — coming to the shop soon!
The list could go on, but with only two full days (and trying to get a little R&R, too), I packed in as much as I could and revisited some of my favourite places. I stayed in areas where I felt comfortable exploring alone. There’s always so much to see and do — and never quite enough time!
What did I pack - lots of loose oversized trousers, long colourful floaty dresses, t-shirts and our POM Fraise blouse which was perfect for wearing for a day wondering around the medina and dressing up in the evenings. I try to pack light to allow lots of room in the suitcase to bring my souk treasures back!
A few other things I love but didn't get round to on this trip are Les Jardins du Lotus- for a really fun supper and night on the tiles, Le Jardin Secret - to wander round and feel inspired, L'Mida- for a delicious lunch in the medina, and of course the YSL gardens!
